Recommending Books Based on a Taylor Swift Songs|| A collab with Nashita @booksandbrownies!

Welcome, welcome- my beloved nemesis’, despised friends’ and unknown strangers’ from the far off corners of the internet. Welcome to my blog!

IS IT JUST ME WHO COMPARES BOOKS TO SONGS, OR IS IT A UNIVERSAL THING?

whenever i listen to a song, i subconsciously find myself connecting it to a book, maybe it’s the lyrics, the tune or the way it made me feel… 9/10 times i ‘assign’ books to songs! it turns out that Nashita @booksandbrownies does the same too! she runs her own book blog, where she screams about taylor swift songs, inej ghafa (six of crows) and shares yummy recipes! go show her blog some love :))

so i had the idea that we could collaborate together- she’s given her top ten taylor swift* songs and i’m recommending books to her, based on the vibes and lyrics!!

the reason i’m posting a recommendation list on a monday, not wednesday/friday is because today is nashita’s sixteenth! the books have been kept a secret as a bit of a surprise ❤ happy birthday darling, i hope you enjoy this post and the book recommendations! i’m so stoked to have one of my best friends doing a collab with me 🥺💖

without further ado, let’s get to the song-recs! all book titles linked!

*if you’re asking why *only* swift…then that’s because i can’t assign books to non-taylor songs, it’s a physical incapability lol.

DRESS—>UNTEACHABLE BY ELLIOT WAKE

All of this silence and patience, pining in anticipation
My hands are shaking from holding back from you
All of this silence and patience, pining and desperately waiting
My hands are shaking from holding back from all this

Dress by Taylor Swift

guys… could i have chosen any other book?? NOPE. this is the one that really fits the Vibe for me and the lyrics fit wonderfully! “Our secret moments in your crowded room/They’ve got no idea about me and you” and the entire chorus?? it’s like the two are MADE for each other! 90% of this song corelates to Unteachable! i can’t even get the lyrics out my my head and since they remind me so much of maise and evan (I DON’T EVEN SHIP THEM??) i can’t get the book and its bloody gorgeous writing out of my head!
if you like new adult romances with lyrical writing and vicious girls, this is the one for you.
TW/CW for teacher-student [legal] relationship, mention of suicide, alcohol consumption, drug use, miscarriage mentioned, death of a sister mentioned and sexual content.

ILLICIT AFFAIRS—LIE WITH ME BY PHILIP BESSON

And that’s the thing about illicit affairs
And clandestine meetings and longing stares
It’s born from just one single glance
But it dies, and it dies, and it dies
A million little times

Illicit Affairs by Taylor Swift

i truly cannot get this book out of my head 😭weeks after reading it i still find myself rereading snippets over and over again, till they’re burnt in my mind. and the song FITS this book so well it’s painful. the agony of first love, the heartbreak and longing is so raw. it’s a queer adult literary novel that hits right there in the feels, so deeply that you can barely feel it- until you do and then it haunts you for a long time.
what can i say? read this if you enjoy books that slowly pierce your heart.
TW/CW for suicide, suicide attempt, AIDS, car accident, ableism, miscarriage, sexual harassment, anxiety attacks, sexism, misogyny, homophobia, fear of coming out, pressure of being closeted, sexual content, divorce and most traumatic ending ever, ouch.

GOLD RUSH—>CHAIN OF GOLD BY CASSANDRA CLARE

Gleaming, twinkling
Eyes like sinking ships
On waters so inviting
I almost jump in

Gold Rush by Taylor Swift

i feel a bit uncertain pairing these two with each other because the lyrics definitely don’t fit but the vibe!! the aesthetic!! it reminds me so very much of unrequited love, edwardian era balls and a soft, tentative romance, i can’t think of any other book that i’ve read, besides Chain of Gold!
the slow beat of the song, the fairytale vibe=THIS BOOK! the lyrics don’t match this book at all though! unrelated but can i just say that this book is so “meh” compared to the sequel?? Chain of Iron is GOD TIER.
all i will say is, pick this up if you want to read a whimsical, romance historical fiction.
TW/CW for alcoholism, death, gore, grief, loss of a loved one, manipulation, sexism, trauma and violence.

ALL TOO WELL—>IT ENDS WITH US BY COLLEEN HOVER

And maybe we got lost in translation
Maybe I asked for too much
But maybe this thing was a masterpiece ’til you tore it all up
Running scared, I was there
I remember it all too well
//And you call me up again just to break me like a promise
So casually cruel in the name of being honest
I’m a crumpled up piece of paper lying here

All Too Well by Taylor Swift

another brilliant case of ‘idk why the hell i’m recommending this book but it fits the lyrics’ i mean, i actually really really REALLY dislike It Ends With Us, lol. i wouldn’t say ‘hate’ that’s too strong a word but yeah, i definitely don’t like this 😂 and as for why i’m ‘recommending’ this book? it just fits the lyrics, nothing more nothing else ❤ sorry, don’t get the hype about the book.

MESSAGE IN THE BOTTLE—>THE CHARM OFFENSIVE BY ALLISON COCHRUN

These days I’m restless
Work days are endless
Look how you’ve made me, made me
But time moves faster
Replaying your laughter
Disaster
//’Cause now
You’re so far away and I’m down
Feelin’ like a face in the crowd
I’m reaching for you, terrified

Message in the Bottle by Taylor Swift

Dev and Charlie are so cute together it physically hurts!! this song feels like a mix of both of their feelings put together, their tentative feelings and them uncertainly reaching for each other.
i wasn’t a big fan of this book (some of the representation didn’t feel fleshed out) but it has grown on me and these characters live in my head rent free! read this if you want chaotic, queer found family and a cute romance.
TW/CW for biphobia, homophobia, panic attacks, vomiting and alcohol consumption.

MS AMERICANA AND THE HEARTBREAK PRINCE—>SPEAK BY LAURIE HALE ANDERSON

American stories
Burning before me
I’m feeling helpless
The damsels are depressed
Boys will be boys, then
Where are the wise men?
Darling, I’m scared

Miss Americana & the Heartbreak Prince by Taylor Swift

i’m sure that this selection will surprise a lot of people. Ms Americana is a love song, ‘speak’ is a book about rape culture and victim blaming. i twisted the lyrics of the song a little though, removed the romancey-lyrics from my head and well, this book popped up. i was going to chose a highschool romance actually, but ‘boys will be boys then/where are the wise men’ haunted my mind and i knew it, i couldn’t chose any other book besides ‘speak’. i don’t talk about this book but i wish i did.
read this if you’ve ever felt sad, lost and angry. read this if you’ve lost your voice. read this if you’re still searching for it.
TW/CW for theme of rape, depression and self harm.

MINE—>THE INVISIBLE LIFE OF ADDIE LARUE BY VE SCHWAB

Flash forward, and we’re takin’ on the world together
And there’s a drawer of my things at your place
You learn my secrets and you figure out why I’m guarded
You say we’ll never make my parents’ mistakes

Mine by Taylor Swift

i mean? yes, kind of? addie larue does fit the aesthetic of ‘mine’ if you reallyyy squint… i genuinely don’t have any other book for this song 😅 (love, i didn’t even read romance until 2021, YA that too) the vibes of this song lean in the adult area so while there are like… two YA books i could pick, i’m going with addie larue.
i don’t ship addie and henry but i have to admit, they fit this song.
also, i feel this book is so underrated as it’s sold as just a romance but in truth it’s so much more! it’s a historical fiction and a life story and a romance, that too yes and a tale about power imbalances and people who are mirrors and most importantly, it’s about how stories are a way you can be remembered.
read this book if you want lyrical writing and a heartbreaking, unforgettable story.
TW/CW for attempted assault, abuse depiction, loss of a loved one, substance abuse, depression depiction, suicidal thoughts and attempted suicide.

SEVEN—>I’LL GIVE YOU THE SUN BY JANDY NELSON

And though I can’t recall your face
I still got love for you
Your braids like a pattern
Love you to the moon and to Saturn
Passed down like folk songs
The love lasts so long

Seven by Taylor Swift

I DON’T KNOW EITHER OKAY SOMETHING JUST CLICKED
*takes a breath and explains in a calmer tone*
the song reminds of of childhood nostalgia, friends to lovers and old forgotten memories…. and so does this book. noah and brian to be more specific. these two tug at my heartstrings 🥺❤️
and this BOOK, just- god- i don’t know why but i have such an intense feeling of love towards it. i need to do a reread! it killed me in the most beautiful way possible.
and as for now, if you like heart-wrenching books about sibling bonds read this.
TW/CW for forced outing, loss of a loved one, grief, infidelity and homophobia.

CALL IT WHAT YOU WANT—>BLACK IRIS BY ELLIOT WAKE

My castle crumbled overnight
I brought a knife to a gunfight
They took the crown, but it’s alright
All the liars are calling me one
Nobody’s heard from me for months
I’m doing better than I ever was […]

Call it What You Want by Taylor Swift

i- no i am physically incapable from not mentioning ‘black iris’ at least once in a book list. the love story in the song and book don’t match but the vibe?? the ‘i don’t give a damn about them’ attitude?? the aesthetic?? yes yes yes a billion times yes! all of elliot wake’s books fit swift’s ‘reputation’ amazingly well, if you like the album you’ll 90% like the books too (and vice versa!)
this is more a revenge story than a love story. it’s about consuming friendships that blur into something else. it’s about messed up people trying to figure out themself. it’s more book than experience.
read this book if you want to be thoroughly fucked up and enjoy every minute of it.
TW/CW for ableism, homophobia, biphobia, outing, slut shaming, drug usage, alcohol consumption, drugging, depression, sexual harassment, child abuse, parental neglect, gun violence, on page suicide and suicide ideation, bullying, blood depictions and murder.

WILDEST DREAMS—>THE SEVEN HUSBANDS’ OF EVELYN HUGO BY TAYLOR JENKINS REID

He’s so tall and handsome as hell
He’s so bad but he does it so well
I can see the end as it begins
My one condition is
//Say you’ll remember me standing in a nice dress
Staring at the sunset, babe

okay, hear me out: evelyn hugo to don adler. IT FITS SO WELL! the infatuation, the longing-the wanting, the knowing that it isn’t going to last but the joy in the beginning. i t f i t s
i took a moment to connect the song and the book but now that i have, i can’t stop thinking about it. both this book and song have my heart. TSHOEH is about ambition, cruelty, sexism, love but at the center of it, it’s about a woman who went to lengths for her family.
this book has a certain, elegant style to it that drags you right in the middle of the book and yet gives you the point of view of a helpless spectator, unable to interfere in.
read this book because it’s heartbreaking and all too real.
TW/CW for  death of a loved one, death of a child, talk of suicide, unhealthy dieting, underage sex with an adult, abortion, talk of miscarriage, a lot of physical abuse, cheating, dunk driving, and homophobic slurs.

i hope y’all enjoyed this as much as i did!! i might do something like this again ❤

thank you nashita for providing with the songs!! happy birthday love, hope you had a great day! 🎊🎊💖thanks for always being there for me and yelling about black iris and taylor swift!! (also you’ve gotten me ADDICTED to gorgeous, delicate, call it what you want and dress, thanks for that lmao) i’d LOVE to do a collab again ❤

HOW MANY OF Y’ALL HERE ARE SWIFTIES? FAVOURITE SONGS? DO Y’ALL COMPARE BOOKS AND SONGS? IF YES, I’D LOVE TO KNOW WHICH ONES!! AND AS ALWAYS, HAVE YOU READ ANY FROM THIS LIST? ❤
