Welcome, welcome- my beloved nemesis’, despised friends’ and unknown strangers’ from the far off corners of the internet. Welcome to my blog!
for someone who claims to be half in love with fantasy, i read very few books that aren’t well, fantasy-with dragons (or phoenixes) and witchcraft and cASTLES AND QUESTS [clamps self]
not that i’m saying that books without flying creatures and castles aren’t fantasy, (okay that’s exactly what i’m saying lol) it’s just that, they’ve been ‘staple’ form of fantasy for years and suddenly i’m seeing a decline in them.
so it is only natural that i, your resident coffee-addicted-writer would take it upon themself and write an adult (new adult?) medievalesque european fantasy! ooh and it also has copious bits of murder and burning as it’s set in the midst of the witch trials! *claps hands* it is fun.
of course, this calls for an introduction to my wip (which y’all all want to know about. obviously.) while ‘murder in the midst of the witch trials’ does sound amazing and marvelous and enchanting and all the fantastical adjectives that are prompted due to the mere word ‘murder’ -i digress- it does not say anything* about the (i) plot (ii) or premise (iii) or cHARACTERS (iv) or the absolute torture i’ve been through while writing it*
and what better introduction than to answer questions, thought up by anoushka and i for the second installment of the pretty deadly words series?
here’s the previous post and FAQ/introduction.
‘Pretty Deadly Words is a monthly meme for writers. it’s co-hosted by ash @inkwordsandash and anoushka @dippedinink. each month we will post ten questions for you to answer. they’ll be based on your writing project and your writing in general. it’s designed to help you understand your plot, characters, their personality traits, flaws (etc) and your writing style!’
*since it’s set in the 1700’s i’m expected to rESEARCH on the mid 18th centaury to make it ‘historically accurate’! and, writing in general sucks out the soul of writers 😪it’s a commonly known fact
how did you get your idea for your current WiP?
i was absolutely obsessed with historical england and their obsession* with the witch trials, i spiraled down into research…and at the inglorious hour of 2am got the idea of a historical fantasy (while i was meant to be doing my physics project) with a pinch of murder and slowburn found family** who constantly try to kill each other (that’s family for you) while burning down the world and whatnot. casual 1600 drama, you know :))
and then in maths class -seriously what is it with me & getting ideas during the classes i hate??- i began to daydream about world domination and how much easier it would be with phoenixes for minions, instead of humans. i don’t remember how 😂 but then one of my characters got a cute phoenix as a pet. both of them are nameless btw. i have a problem with naming characters.
*england is and was freakily obsessed with killing people. idk why, #englandpleaseexplain
**it’s never my book if there ISN’T found family. heck, there may be no dragons but there will be chaotic friendships and found family.
is this your first WiP?
no but i’m so out of touch with writing a new draft, it sure is feeling like one😂
have you ever cowritten before and if yes, would you do it again?
yes i have! my first finished book was cowritten with my friend and, to be honest the only reason it was finished was because it was cowritten. i was (and still am) horrendous at completing drafts and she got into writers blocks ridiculously fast.
this book is actually the haunted school WiP that i’m rewriting!
i would cowrite again (i actually am cowriting a ✨mysterious✨ retelling with anoushka!) but only if our writing styles match and if we’ve both written the genre before.
tell us the genre of your WiP!
if the time period and phoenixes haven’t made it obvious already… it’s historical fantasy! i’ve never tried my hand at it before (i’m writing two hisfic fantasy’s right now, actually. one is this nameless creature, and the other is a project i’ve dubbed ‘indian heist’ because,,, that too is nameless 😂) but i have written both genres individually.
am definitely finding the ‘fantasy’ aspect easier 🙌🏽 historical accuracy is HARD and i’ve had to change my writing style, a little, to match the manner of speaking in the 1600’s.
pitch of current WiP (eg, aces of spades is pitched as ‘get out’ meets ‘gossip girl’ but make it black and queer)
asdfghjkl can i pass on a question i’ve created?? because NO IDEA. it’s loosely inspired by BBC’s Merlin and it’s stylistically similar to ‘these violent delights’ so i’d say
merlin meets these violent delights in a reimagining of 1690s britain with a hint of political intrigue….and murder.
this is 100% wishful thinking btw 😂my writing is nowhere near as good to chloe gong’s or tasha suri’s.
what’s the premise?/what is it about
in the poetic sense, it’s about intolerance and generations of prejudice poisoning the world, about being hated for who you are, for the blood you have running in your veins-and then finding a family who loves you -not despite it, but because of it. there are lots of tears but there’s also lots of love- it’s a love letter to all the marginalised people around the world, in the form of a historical fantasy.
//it has four main characters but the first few chapters focus on a warlock planning to save his druid friend from the stake. he’s sleep deprived, would LOVE caffeine if it was available then, extremely sassy and platonically ends up falling for the disguised prince of the rival kingdom. it’s the sarcastic dumbass x the brilliant mastermind but PLATONIC and done in friends-to-enemies-to-mutual-respect-to-begrudging allies-to-friends-to-i’d-steal-the-moon-for-you style and they’re honestly such wholesome idiots i can’t-
also there’s a bisexual sorceress masquerading as a princess who’s the best at poisons and a brilliant genius who’s underappreciated, really. also she thirsts to burn down the world and she’s beautiful and i’d probably let her.
there’s blood and gore and guts but also magic and politics- it’s quite a RIDE.
do you have an aesthetic?? if yes, do share it!
do i spend more time outlining the story, or saving aesthetic pins on pinterest? [spoiler alert: it’s pinterest😂]
what are you enjoying the most, while writing this?
(i’m technically outlining it but my outlines are always detailed, like 3k-5k word outlines)
i’m having a blast with the character dynamics!! i’ve always preferred and enjoyed writing the characters and their relationships-that has not changed in the past few years. the warlock x prince relationship is extremely entertaining to write! the prince’s identity has been revealed and while the warlock can’t openly snub him, there’s a lot of underlying sarcasm and dry humour.
there are a few of my favourite tropes ahead and loads of betrayal/angst (for when the prince realises that the warlock is a warlock) i cANNOT WAIT and the POLITICS AHHHHHHH (fictional politics are the only politics i enjoy. let me have it, y’all🤣)
also there’s a phoenix who’s the literal BEST and is helping the sorceress burn down the world and i love the two of them 🙌🏽 #lifegoals
are you facing any difficulties, if yes do share! people might be able to help you out ❤
nO NONE AT ALL BESIDES THAT MY CHARACTERS DO NOT HAVE FREAKING NAMES
why is naming so hard o_o *
also uhm, i can’t take the plot forward. i literally do not know HOW to do it. this is what happens when you write a new draft after oNE YEAR and chose a POLITICAL premise that too. god sometimes i hate my ideas.
the historical writing style is painful to write but it’s also kinda entertaining because i write footnotes & criticism and poke fun at my own writing 😂 i highly recommend doing this if you’re bored while writing. it livens things up and also reminds you to edit [x] (or whatever changes you wish to make)
*i have a newfound appreciation for parents who give their children a name -without having an existential crisis-which their kids must carry for at least ten years, i can never make character names stick for ten HOURS, much less ten days.
and finally, summarise your WiP in (only) five words!
wow why do i come up with such difficult questions lol.
NAMELESS morallygrey (why yes that *is* one word)
that’s my very chaotic WiP for you lol. historical fantasy is a very uhm, fascinating genre to write but… my search history is more fascinating. here’s a sneak peak
that you didn’t ask for but got anyways
‘who ruled over england in the 1600s and why were they obsessed with witches?’ (no seriously just let them live in peace 😂)
‘punishment for hurling mashed potatoes at a prince in medieval england’ (i’ve only outlined the scene but i already know that i’m going to LOVE writing it)
‘was the word nemesis invented in 1600s?’ (thankfully, YES it was)
‘charges for homicide in 1600s england’ (i swear i’m alright)
i think my search history says more about my WiP than the answers above 👀
NOW THAT YOU KNOW AN EMBARRESING AMOUT OF INFORMATION ABOUT MY WIP, IT’S ONLY FAIR THAT YOU OVERSHARE ABOUT YOURS TOO AHA. I’D LOVE TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR PREMISE (…AND SEARCH HISTORY. PLEASE SHARE ALL THE CREEPY HISTORY LOL) HOPE YOU ENJOYED THIS POST AND PARTICIPATE IN ‘PRETTY DEADLY WORDS’ ❤
