Welcome, welcome- my beloved nemesis’, despised friends’ and unknown strangers’ from the far off corners of the internet. Welcome to my blog!
IT IS NO SECRET THAT I ADORE THE FOUND FAMILY TROPE, IT’S NOT LIKE I’M EXACTLY ‘SUBTLE’ LOL
a lot of my favourite books have the found family trope, most of the shows i see have it. EVERYTHING i’ve written has found family! (or really close friendships/sibling bonds) yes i am OBSESSED.
i could truly talk about this wonderous trope forever and i’m barely being hyperbolic- I LOVE IT SO DAMN MUCH.
it’s because they CHOSE to be family, they chose to live and die for each other!! the dynamics in found family just murder me over and over again ah.
“i can’t believe i’m saying this but i would die for you”/”somewhere along the road we went from wanting to kill each other to wanting to kill FOR each other”/bonding over shared trauma/sharing one braincell/”hahaha yes this dude was my arch nemesis but know we are besties so it’s all cool now”
god, something about this trope just kills me over and over again. ESPECIALLY slow burn found family oh my heart that’s basically slow burn enemies to lovers but PLATONIC and SO MUCH MORE EMOTIONAL GODS-
also it usually has 3+ people.
because i love helping your tbr grow, i have a list of ten books with heavenly-ness aka found family!
[Top Ten Tuesday | books with your favourite trope]
sometimes family is just a morally grey criminal in love with a suli acrobat, badass girl who could kiss & kill you simultaneously, chaotic bisexual-deadly with guns, a cinnamon roll druskelle overcoming his prejudices [& falling for a grisha <3], a bisexual grisha with a love for waffles and a gay dyslexic boy loving all five of them deeply.
i mean,,,i could not mention found family and NOT mention six of crows y’all-
this is [one of] the best books with found family!! i LOVE how the crows go from
“i loathe you with every inch of my being” to “eh maybe they’re not that bad but like-i still don’t like them” to “ahhh i may or may not be enjoying their company” to “I WOULD FIST FIGHT EVERY SINGLE HUMAN FOR THEM but don’t read too much into that because it means NOTHING ah” to the long awaited “I LOVE THEM, THEY’RE THE FAMILY I NEVER HAD”
the best aspect? that it’s never said out loud or admitted by anyone- it’s just silently understood. just read the below quote AND TELL ME THAT YOUR HEART IS STILL INTACT
Until this moment, Wylan hadn’t quite understood how much they meant to him. His father would have sneered at these thugs and thieves, a disgraced soldier, a gambler who couldn’t keep out of the red. But they were his first friends, his only friends, and Wylan knew that even if he’d had his pick of a thousand companions, these would have been the people he chose.Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo
this-just this book! it’s one of my all time favourite contemporary novels AND IT HAS MY HEART-or whatever of it, it spared anyways- AND SOUL.
this book-a three hundred page something- spoke to me so deeply. there was something about Vicky, about her experience online with instagram [goodreads for me] where she found a space for herself- that hit too close to home.
also, the friends she has by the end of the story?? the awkward yet tight-nit group they have become?? the silent, understanding friendship between all of them, that they’re there for each other?? and the way they show their friendship and love for it each other?? JUST KILL ME NOW THAT WOULD BE LESS PAINFUL, GOSH I FRIKKING LOVE IT SO MUCH-
and and, i love the way this book tackled social anxiety & showed that yeah, it’s intimidating to just suddenly talk to new and random people but tiny steps are the way to go there ❤
the below quote isn’t a found family quote but it’s one that i really loved.
Jeremy Everling gives me a thumbs-up from across the cafeteria, and it’s not that I care what Jeremy Everling thinks, but somehow that is the signal that tells me it’s going to be okay. It’s okay to be me—as flawed as the dusty, imperfect floor of my bedroom. To be afraid and weird. To blurt out whatever pops into my head, or refuse to speak. If Vicurious has taught me anything, it’s that there are more people out there like me than I ever could’ve imagined. I can be myself, whatever form that takes, and I’ll never be alone. How to Disappear by Sharon Huss Roat
this book is so many things. but in the center of it all, it’s about an ambitious woman who wanted her own family and went to hell and back for it.
nothing i say will ever be able to capture the amount of love i feel towards this book. it’s cliché but true. it’s one of those rare books you don’t really realise you’re in love with, until you’re sobbing your whole damn heart out.
just go and read this book. it’s one of the best ones out there and will completely rip out your heart.
it’s about a woman, her lover, her best friend-how the two were mistaken for each other- her daughter and the force that drove her to rise up and become hollywood’s most famous star.
hauntingly realistic with gorgeous writing, the seven husbands of evelyn hugo is a captivating book that i’m so grateful i had the privilege of reading.
When you write the ending, Monique, make sure it’s clear that I don’t love this apartment, that I don’t care about all my money, that I couldn’t give a rat’s ass if people think I’m a legend, that the adoration of millions of people never warmed my bed. When you write the ending, Monique, tell everyone that it is the people I miss. Tell everyone that I got it wrong. That I chose the wrong things most of the time. When you write the ending, Monique, make sure the reader understands that all I was ever really looking for was family. Make sure it’s clear that I found it. Make sure they know that I am heartbroken without it. Spell it out if you have to.Say that Evelyn Hugo doesn’t care if everyone forgets her name. Evelyn Hugo doesn’t care if everyone forgets she was ever alive. Better yet, remind them that Evelyn Hugo never existed. She was a person I made up for them. So that they would love me. Tell them that I was confused, for a very long time, about what love was. Tell them that I understand it now, and I don’t need their love anymore. yet another novel i’m obsessed with!
it’s about love [platonic and romantic] obsessions, friendships that blur into romance and the dark depths of the human mind- all wrapped up in intoxicating, lyrical writing that spans 370-or-so pages.
it’s one of the darkest, most messed up books i’ve ever read and i f cking love it! elliot wake [formerly leah raeder] knows intense friendships- understands the messy tangled webs of it, especially intense female friendships, and that’s partly why this book is so freaking fantastic. -the other part being the intoxicating, atmospheric writing.
laney. armin. blythe. i don’t think i’ll ever be able to forgot them and their messed up dynamic. or this book and the messed up fact that it’s one of my favourites. (i highly recommend that you read it in publication order, starting from unteachable and ending with bad boy, if you’re interested in elliot wake’s books)
As I dozed, my head filled with silly memories, things that used to make me happy. The time the three of us were walking to the beach and stumbled into an alley with amazing acoustics, and Armin sang backup while Blythe and I belted our lungs out to “Total Eclipse of the Heart.” Or that drunken night I told her, “Talk Australian to me,” and she rattled off every clichéd phrase she could think of from ‘fair dinkum’ to ‘no worries, mate’ while I feigned a swoon and Armin caught me in his arms, laughing. Or when he taught me how to greet someone in Persian, ever patient, and I tripped over my tongue and Blythe fell on the couch in hysterics and Hiyam listened appraisingly, giving unexpected encouragement.black iris by elliot wake (written under leah raeder)
i. am. addicted.
TKAK is a fantastic retelling of the little mermaid, except darker and with more blood. also the mermaid -or siren in this case- is more independent and literally steals the hearts of royals. (also 100x better than the retelling.)
it is a novel about following your heart -as cliché as it might be- and a slow burn enemies to lovers romance between a siren and a siren hunter. but below the bloodshed and angst, it’s a story about finding and making your own family.
i adored the character dynamics in this one! the angst and tension between lira and elian, the found family between elian and his crew, the precarious bond between lira and her cousin! the author sure knows how to write character dynamics. (and the banter gosh!)
the writing too, is amazing and lyrical, i was startled when i realised it was a debut novel!
The ship turns hard starboard, swinging in a broad circle as my crew scurries around the deck, anxious for the return to Midas. They’re not all natives; some are from neighboring kingdoms like Armonía or Adékaros. Countries they grew bored of, or those that were thrown into mayhem after the death of their princes. They’re from everywhere and their homes are nowhere, but they call Midas so because I do. Even if it is a lie for them and for me. My crew is my family and though I could never say it – perhaps, don’t need to say it – the Saad is my true home.to kill a kingdom by alexandra christo
[because i cannot include ALL the series in the shaowhunter chronicles, please just take this very messy collage of the series ah]
can i go without mentioning this chronicles in a post at least ONCE? no, i cannot 🙂
i am 100% biased so mayybe take these words with a pinch of salt, lol.
to put it simply, i am in love with this series. to make it a little lengthy- THIS CHRONICLES HAS MY HEART AND THE CHARACTER DYNAMICS AND FOUND FAMILY GOSH I WOULD DIE FOR THEM I LOVE THIS CHRONICLES WITH WHATEVER OF MY HEART IT SPARED FHDSKJHFSHKFJ.
i cannot, will not chose a quote to encompass the gorgeous found family dynamics because it’s something you need to read and experience first hand. the real reason is that i don’t have the books with me right now and don’t feel like scavenging through the internet for them lmaoo
the only thing i’ve been shrieking about this month is the foxhole court trilogy BECAUSE I AM HEAD OVER HEELS IN LOVE WITH IT. just,,, go read this trilogy, I’LL LOVE YOU FOREVER OK???
the most heartbreaking thing about this trilogy is how astonished neil is when he learns that there are people who consider him their friends.
gosh, i love how fiercely they protect each other-and refuse to admit it, simultaneously. also, andrew might be the one protecting the foxes but renee is the one holding them all together, aha.
is it possible for a human to marry a book?? because i’d like to marry this one very much😭
“Being related doesn’t make us family.”foxhole court
oh hell, this was so much fun. i LOVED the mental health discussions and how it portrayed that love isn’t a cure-all for depression or any other mental illness but good friends and a support system are a way to give yourself some breathing space.
love, [romantic or platonic] does not cure you but it does make you feel seen and The Charm Offensive does a wonderful job of showing that!
this is one of the most cute and diverse romcoms i’ve ever read!! and the friendships are truly top tier!! the best part is, that no one is cis or straight! queer!!found!!family!!supremacy!!
the ending, with all the characters supporting each other made me tear up a little, ah.
i can’t pick out just one quote ’cause the ENDING is a masterpiece & exactly what found family is!!
FRANCES, ALED, DANIEL AND RAINA ARE THE PINNACLE OF FOUND FAMILY SAYING IT HERE AND NOW
kvgahgjasgjcngsj THESE FOUR THOUGH-
i am literally incoherent when it comes to this book and the character dynamics so please just read it asap!
radio silence has one of the most beautiful friendships i’ve ever read about! Frances and Aled are platonic soulmates (!!) and the Frances-Raina and Frances-Daniel friendship just warms my frigid heart!! i need more of these chaotic gays!!
it’s so diverse [all the four characters are queer!] and i LOVE the message that romance is not greater than platonic love!! THANK YOUU!!
the best part though? NO ROMANCE between Aled and Frances!!
“And I’m platonically in love with you.”radio silence
“That was literally the boy-girl version of ‘no homo’, but I appreciate the sentiment.”
i am not mentioning the percy jackson or heroes of olympus series?? *gasp*
magnus chase [the trilogy, not the guy lmao] is so underrated AND SO GOOD.
it’s riordan’s most diverse trilogy till date (i think??) and just as fantastic as the PJO/kane chronicles series!
i especially adore the friendship between Magnus-Samirah-Alex-TJ-Mallory and the rest. it’s so subtle and wholesome fgkusfgksffgjk.
AND THE ENDING OF SHIP OF DEAD!! it’s basically an appreciation-chapter for all of magnus’ friends ahh. when i was a kid i was obsessed with that chapter and reread it 986796 times lol.
i can’t quote it below because it is literally an entire chapter, lol.
i claim to be unable to pick a favourite trope but if i had to chose to devour one trope for the rest of my life, it would probably be this one.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE TROPE? DO YOU LIKE FOUND FAMILY? WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE BOOK WITH CLOSE FRIENDSHIPS?
PS: i’m going to be offline in the blogsphere till tuesday the 15th ❤
